Orientation and Mobility on the Urban Trail

Tommy’s school has an urban trail that allows children of all mobility levels to learn orientation and mobility skills in a safe environment right on campus. There’s an audible stoplight, a tactile map, and all the little things that kids need to practice to get around. You have to keep it fun, so don’t forget about the wheelchair accessible swing set and sensory garden.

Check out the tactile and braille/ text map of the urban trail. Yes, there is a dinosaur! (statue)

I spoke with Tommy’s orientation and mobility teacher in June and she says that Tommy will begin using the trail for lessons this year. I am really happy with Tommy’s cane skills, but I’m no professional. His teacher assured me that he’s doing really well and praised us for taking his cane everywhere. That seems so strange to me. Of course we take his cane everywhere. He needs it!

Oh yeah. Tommy helped dedicate the Urban Trail a couple of years ago when he was their newest student. Check out the article and pictures on the WPSBC Insights Newsletter.  He was so little!
